Pacific Lamprey Challenge

When the US Fish and Wildlife Department wanted to create a challenge cache series to educate the public about the Pacific Lamprey, they wanted to give participants something to remember the experience by.  They were looking for a gift that would be meaningful to Geocachers, but which is available on a budget.  They selected Pathtags!

The only way to get their beautiful tag is by completeing the cache series, located just Southwest of Olympia, Washington.

Here are all six mystery cache sites:

The overall goals of this program are:
  • Educate the public about the Pacific Lamprey
  • Educate the public about the Chehalis River Basin and the partners working to conserve/restore it.
  • Connect People With Nature via geocaching

Walton Robotics FIRST Team 2974 Pathtag

FIRST is a nonprofit organization founded by famed inventor Dean Kamen to promote Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) careers among young people. The vehicle for making this happen is a program of competitive robotics tournaments for children as young as Kindergarten through high school.

In 2013, Walton Robotics Team 2974 decided to do something special to leave a lasting impression on the people they "crossed paths with" at their competition.  They created a Pathtag to give to other attendees!

Lisa Malice, one of the team's mentors, said "The pathtags were a big hit with the students because it was a unique give-away and because of the creative approach to spreading our message. Geocachers I met loved it, but the muggle families I talked with were really intrigued! We are starting to see log ins pop up on our tag map, including the ones I sent to Australia and Oregon to collectors who agreed to place them in geocaches."

"I am just amazed at the response to my first tag. It is AMAZING to me that all the folks that I have traded with here have traded honestly and promptly. What a great group of people to trade tags with. I am not hooked on this Pathtag thing and am looking forward to making a second tag. Kudos to the Pathtag Community!!"

"Rocky Glen Grommets are absolutely delighted with their Curry Quarry Emu - midnightgothicangel and the production team have done a magnificent job - our shipment arrived earlier than we expected and Quarry Emu is already in circulation around the globe!"

"I love to trade pathtags with other geocachers! My tag is "one way" I can share my faith."

"Thank you so very much to Pathtags and the designer of the tag, Sunset Tags. The wonderful art of the tag is incredible. This tag is so much better than we had expected. We had fast service from both Pathtags and Sunset Tags. The detail of the work is awesome, and we are proud to leave this signature tag in the geocaches we find. "

"All I have to say is that my new tags look AWESOME! I even received them sooner than I had estimated, which is great too! I can't stop myself from admiring them every chance I get. Thanks so much!"

Shonash_Eastwood

"Being new to Geocaching - we weren't too sure what to do when we first discovered a Pathtag - but we soon learned and found a new hobby as well. It is so much fun to find a new one and see where it came from and learn about the owners. I decided to order one for my husband's birthday (he is hard to buy for), so I contacted one of the designers that you have listed, and she helped me with this wonderful design. I think the glitter really adds to it. Luckily, the tags arrived on Saturday and Sunday was his Birthday - so they came in just in time to give them to him. We have had a large amount of interest in them since I put them on the site Saturday night. Thanks for offering this fun way of adding to our Geocaching. We will be dropping them off in some special caches as we go along."

"I loved Ver. 1 of this tag but Ver. 2 is a lot better. My name adds to my Ham Radio Call Sign and the custom ID on the back is fantastic, I love it. The colors are great, they represent two flags. Excellent work!!!"

"We just got our first Path Tags. They are great! We can't wait to start leaving them in geocaches. They got here in plenty of time for us to take them to Midwest GeoBash (2009) in July. Thanks for the great service."

Ginsu Macloed

"I got my pathtags today! They are awesome! The entire process was so smooth and easy. I already made my first trade online and love how simple the process was. Thanks so much. Look forward to my next tags."
