Pacific Lamprey Challenge

When the US Fish and Wildlife Department wanted to create a challenge cache series to educate the public about the Pacific Lamprey, they wanted to give participants something to remember the experience by.  They were looking for a gift that would be meaningful to Geocachers, but which is available on a budget.  They selected Pathtags!

The only way to get their beautiful tag is by completeing the cache series, located just Southwest of Olympia, Washington.

Here are all six mystery cache sites:

The overall goals of this program are:
  • Educate the public about the Pacific Lamprey
  • Educate the public about the Chehalis River Basin and the partners working to conserve/restore it.
  • Connect People With Nature via geocaching

Walton Robotics FIRST Team 2974 Pathtag

FIRST is a nonprofit organization founded by famed inventor Dean Kamen to promote Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) careers among young people. The vehicle for making this happen is a program of competitive robotics tournaments for children as young as Kindergarten through high school.

In 2013, Walton Robotics Team 2974 decided to do something special to leave a lasting impression on the people they "crossed paths with" at their competition.  They created a Pathtag to give to other attendees!

Lisa Malice, one of the team's mentors, said "The pathtags were a big hit with the students because it was a unique give-away and because of the creative approach to spreading our message. Geocachers I met loved it, but the muggle families I talked with were really intrigued! We are starting to see log ins pop up on our tag map, including the ones I sent to Australia and Oregon to collectors who agreed to place them in geocaches."

"Wow! We could not believe how good our 1st Pathtag came out! We are fully addicted now & got to trade them at GeoWoodstock VIII in Seattle! We went thru 200 already and have placed a reorder! We plan on order more different tags soon!"

"Tags arrived yesterday and they far exceed my expectations. Absolutely beautiful job. I designed these as a gift for my daughter and son-in-law and they were thrilled. Thanks, Pathtags."

"When I found my first pathtag I moved it to another geocache not knowing what I had found. After learning more about them, I found another a few months later and I kept it. Then another few months went by and I had the priviledge of meeting Jellyfish and trippy1976 at an event, within minutes I was hooked! Ed and Mike not only were able to answer my questions, they gave me a few tags to help fuel the desire to create, gift and trade my own. I've since created 2 tags with 2 more planned for the near future, with more to follow. Another pathtag addict is born, thanks for helping with the addiction! ~Lion "

"WOW!!! I absolutely loved the tag. WAY exceeded my expectations. I had a very hard time waiting for these. It seemed I would never get these tags. I couldn't stand waiting. BUT the wait was well worth it. AWESOME!!!! Big smiles here."

"This tag is a bit of a change from my earlier signature tags. I think it turned out great, and I hope it will be a good trader. I really enjoy pathtags, and most of all, I enjoy trading. Let the trading begin. Thanks!!"

"I just wanted to send you a note to let you know I received my pathtags and how overwhelmingly satisfied I am with them. They came out even better than I expected they would considering the problems we were having getting the template right. I can't wait to start trading them at events and on the trails. I will definitely keep you in mind when I am ready for my 2008 pathtag, as well as my wife's pathtag."

KRnlKilR

"This is our first pathtag and we are very excited to receive it. The quality is excellent and the response for trades has been overwhelming. I guess we need to order more."

"What's a pathtag? How do you make one? You mean people will actually like and want your tag and trade for one? I think I drove Gary at TexasDreamweaver nuts, but he did a great job! I waited, and waited.....checked the blueprint 20 times a day. I waited....and waited....anxiety building, excitement mounting as I told everyone I work with about these. They arrived on a Friday...and I RIPPED the box open in my CAR!! Ahhhhhh! They were GORGEOUS!! The detail! The color! and when you advertised GLOW, did they EVER! I frantically reordered and am designing another. 2 tags and I'm addicted to that rush you get when you hold that little work of art in your hand! Thank YOU. Your effort and attention to detail are outstanding!"

"I found my first Pathtag in 2009 and did not know what it was. I just gave them away or placed them in other caches. Once I realized that you could trade and collect them with Geocachers around the world I was hooked. This is my first tag, Designed by Dark Star and limited to 100. It is still undergoing revisions, but I know it will turn out awesome. Team Low Tech is a iPhone(3G/S) Geocaching group with active members in Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Texas. "
