Australian Native Birds - Kingfisher
There are over 80 species of Kingfisher which can be found worldwide on every continent with exception of Antarctica. In Australia we have 10 species of Kingfisher which can be divided into 3 groups - Forest Kingfishers, River Kingfishers and Kookaburras.
The bird depicted on this Pathtag is the Azure Kingfisher (Alcedo azurea), a River Kingfisher.
The Azure Kingfisher takes its name from the beautiful bright blue plumage on the bird’s head, wings and upper parts. The throat is white and the chest begins with a wash of orange becoming more reddish on the belly. This Kingfisher has a long black beak and bright orange legs and feet.
The Azure Kingfisher can be found near rivers, streams, billabongs and lagoons from the Northern Territory all the way down the east coast of mainland Australia and Tasmania.
Kingfishers are famous for the plunging dives they employ when hunting for food. The Azure Kingfisher feeds on small fish and crustaceans such as crabs and yabbies. It will scan the water from a low perch then dive quickly causing a splash as it grabs its prey then dart back to its perch. The prey is turned around in its long beak then swallowed head first.
