Tag #14913 - The Fowey Tag (retired)
by gribbin
My home is the town of Fowey (pronounced "Foy"), a natural harbour on the south coast of Cornwall (the far south-west of Britain).
Fowey`s quiant appearance hides an anarchic past. During the Middle Ages the "Fowey Gallants" waged a private war against French shipping. A Royal messenger sent to remind the local pirates that England wasn`t at war with France had his nose & ears cut off! Later "free trading" was rife, with 81 Fowey vessels confiscated for smuggling between 1786 and 1815.
Fowey`s harbour now contains a mix of pleasure craft & small freighters that call in to load shipments of china clay.
This design has been produced with a shiny copper finish. The tags will be placed in geocaches near the town, if you find one feel free to keep it.
**April 2012 - I`ve just run out of this one but will probably do a refill later in the year.
