Samurai is the term for the military nobility of pre-industril Japan.  The samurai used various weapons, but the katana is the weapon that has come to be synonymous with samurai, metaphorically speaking.

Miyamoto Musashi (c. 1584–June 13 (Japanese calendar: May 19), 1645), also known as Shinmen Takezō, Miyamoto Bennosuke, or by his Buddhist name Niten Dōraku, was a Japanese swordsman and samurai famed for his duels and distinctive style.

Kanji are the Chinese characters that are used in the modern Japanese writing system along with hiragana, katakana, Indo Arabic numerals, and the occasional use of the Latin alphabet (known as the Romanization of Japanese. The Japanese term kanji literally means "Han characters" or "Chinese characters" and is the same written term used in the Chinese language to refer to the character writing system.
