The Cobra name was applied to Shelby Mustangs for the first time in 1968. In February 1968, the GT500KR "King of the Road" debuted; under the hood was a 428 cubic-inch Cobra Jet V8 which was conservatively rated at 335 horsepower.
Carroll Shelby (designer of the Cobra) terminated his agreement with Ford in the summer of 1969. The GT350 and GT500 for the 1969–70 model years received extensive face lifts. Ford was heavily involved with design and style decisions, with Shelby having very little input. The GT350 was now equipped with a 351 cubic-inch V8. Production of Shelby Mustangs ceased with the 1970 model year..
In 2004, a new Ford Shelby Cobra concept was shown off at US car shows. Built with a retro body mimicking the 1960s Cobras mixed with modern touches, it was based on the Ford GT chassis. It received overwhelmingly positive press reviews and won the "Best In Show" award at Detroit International Auto Show.
In 2005, the Shelby Cobra GT500 was revealed and became available in the summer of 2006 as part of the model year 2007 lineup. Although Carroll Shelby had no hands-on involvement in the design of the car, he did provide Ford and SVT (Special Vehicle Team) input on what would make the car better.
The history is choppy but we could add pages about the ends and outs of the Cobra Mustang's development. If you have anything interesting you wish to share or that we should know please do so. For more information goto http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shelby_Mustang
