This tag is in honor of our 5th wedding anniversary.
The Red-Billed Streamertail hummingbird, also known as the Doctor Bird, can only be found in Jamaica (where we got married!) and is the National Bird of Jamaica. It is the most abundant of the hummingbird family on the island.
There are many stories that explain the naming of the Doctor Bird. One states that it is called doctor because the long tail (of the adult male) resembles the long black tail coats doctors were known to wear in the past. Another explains that it is called doctor because it gives medicine to the plants when it lances the flowers with its long bill. Yet another explains that is because it is associated with tobacco, a ritual plant also used as medicine by Taino shamans (medicine men).
Well, when we got married in Jamaica, we were given a temporary certificate as our proof. It was about 6 weeks after we returned when I received our official marriage certificate in the mail. I was thrilled to see that the certificate had a beautiful colored image of the Doctor Bird, with it's streamers flowing down the side!!
If you visit the bird sanctuary in Montego Bay, you may be lucky enough to have a Doctor Bird perch on your finger!
