Eowyn, niece to King Theoden of Rohan, a noble daughter of the House of Eorl--in my opinion she is the most inspiring and compelling female character in Tolkien's Lord of the Rings trilogy. Strong-willed, courageous, and dedicated to the cause of the greater good, Eowyn refuses to let traditional gender roles stand in the way of fulfilling her true potential as a warrior princess. Whether I read the book or see the film, the most deeply moving scene is the one in which she confronts the Lord of the Nazgul:
Witch-King: "No living man can slay me."
Eowyn: "I am no man!"
The romance between Eowyn and Faramir is likewise my favorite in the epic tale. When she decides to wed him she declares, "I will be a shieldmaiden no longer, nor vie with the great Riders, nor take joy only in the songs of slaying. I will be a healer, and love all things that grow and are not barren," demonstrating that gentleness and strength are not mutually exclusive.
